The W Park

The West Park is a cross-border zone between Benin, Niger and Burkina-Faso and part of the W-Arly-Pendjari complex. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The W, whose name comes from the shape of the Niger River which forms its northern limit in Niger, is found in the Sahel-Sudanese bio-regions and experiences a similar climate. It receives its 700 to 900 millimeters of annual precipitation mainly between June and November; with the only dry season going from November to May. The undulating plateau marks the end of the Atacora mountain range, also called "Monts-Togo". The Park is characterized, in the South, by a wooded savannah and gallery forests, in the North by an open savannah strewn with thorny scrub. It is part of the Niger river basin and receives two large river systems, the Mékrou and the Alibori. Since June 2020, the Wcôté Bénin national park has been managed by African Park in addition to the management of the Pendjari Park.
