Dantokpa International Market

Built in 1963, it is the largest market in West Africa. It is located near Lake Nokoué. ‘’ Dantokpa ’’ means in the local Fon language, “at the edge of the Dan Lagoon”; "Dan" being a deity represented by the serpent. The market still houses within it an altar reserved for this deity. It covers an area of more than 20 hectares and is structured by precise zoning. The "Dantokpa" market is regularly visited by Beninese from all over the country as well as by foreigners.  Everyone finds interesting business opportunities there. In a special and hot atmosphere, the visit of the "Dantokpa" market is usually done independently, but if you can, do not hesitate to bring a local to better explore it. An African market that will make you live an experience that could not be more atypical!

According to one tourist, It could be a frustrating and chaotic experience for non-Africans, but I believe that every traveler should visit this market. You can find many thinks from food, fabrics, handicrafts, etc (it doesn't mean that you will find at a better price. There are smaller markets for that). But still, it is a market that you will have a very good feeling about the daily life of the locals. I also recommend crossing the river with the " pirogue", the wooden boat that the locals use for their transportation.
